Natural Dye- Intro to Plant dyes and mordants

Description:

Come learn the art of natural pigments, and unlock a spectrum of color!

Learn the basics of extracting pigment from plants to dye natural fibers (mostly protein- silk/wool oriented but some suitable for cellulose/plant based- cotton/hemp, etc)

We will do some hands-on dyeing with fermented black walnut dye, extracting and dyeing with osage orange (wood), and we will produce and dye with an Indigo vat (a magical, color changing oxidation process!) and other potential plant dye sources. Heather will have yarn and silk scarves available, but feel free to bring a small, natural fiber item to dye.

During this workshop, our experienced Fiber Artist Instructor, Heather Cornelius, will lead you on extracting natural and color fast dye from plants, and how to use mordants. Heather will be teaching our Fiber Intensive at MAPS this year, and has taught at Home-school co-ops, all over the DMV.

This class has a $20-$30 material fee, for the wool and silk.

Heather Cornelius - Instructor

Heather has been passionate about fiber arts for two decades, teaching all ages for the last 10 years. Natural dyeing with plants she grows and forages marries her love of fiber arts and her botanical interests. Handspinning raw wool aquired from the local fibershed is one of her favorite expressions of sustainable craftmanship.
